What’s the difference between BOTOX® and Dysport®?

Dysport® or BOTOX®? BOTOX® and Dysport® treatments are a great way to ease your way into the cosmetic injectables experience in a very positive way! You might think they are the same, but there are some differences between these two wrinkle reduction treatments. Both Dysport® and BOTOX® help smooth the appearance of wrinkles, but they are manufactured differently. In the hands of a highly-skilled professional like Trish Hultgren, FNP-C, our Scottsdale office’s board-certified nurse practitioner, the results achieved can be subtle, yet natural without looking frozen or expressionless. Here’s everything you need to know about the difference between Dysport® and BOTOX®.

Two different sizes of syringes

Different Concentrations

These popular neuromodulators have one main difference in their formulas. While they both temporarily block nerve endings in a dose-dependent manner and help to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, Dysport® is formulated in a different way using abobotulinumtoxin-A (ABO) while BOTOX® uses onabotulinumtoxin-A (ONA). This slight difference affects the potency which then affects their duration and onset of desired results. While BOTOX® may be more potent than Dysport®, Dysport® tends to spread quickly into the desired area such as crow’s feet and frown lines. Dysport® also acts quicker, in about 3 to 4 days! If your lines are deeper or more mature, BOTOX® might be the right option for you due to the higher potency!

Results

If you’re looking for results by the weekend, Dysport® is a great option! Because Dysport® spreads faster among larger areas when compared to BOTOX®, the results will kick in faster. This means that if you make an appointment on a Monday or Tuesday, you will be able to see your results by the weekend! In contrast, BOTOX® takes about one to two weeks to see your full results. This makes Dysport® a great option for someone who wants a subtle yet noticeable difference for a big event like a wedding or graduation ceremony. Both Dysport® and BOTOX® are minimally invasive procedures so you won’t have any downtime before your big event.

Price

The cost of each treatment varies depending on the desired results. Smaller areas require fewer units of Dysport® or BOTOX® such as a lip flip or the frown line 11’s between your brows. Larger areas like the forehead area and crow’s feet will cost you a little extra. If you’re looking for affordable treatment, Dysport® might be the option for you. At Guerra Plastic Surgery Center in Scottsdale, we offer Dysport® at $4 per unit and BOTOX® is $12 per unit. As with any injectable procedure, Trish Hultgren, FN-P, our highly experienced cosmetic injector specialist, recommends preparing for your appointment a couple of days in advance. Make sure to not drink any alcoholic beverages less than 24 hours before your appointment. Alcohol can cause you to bruise more easily around the injection site. Another helpful tip we recommend is to always wear a new mask after your procedure.
